Al Futaisi Island

If you’re looking for a totally off-the-map adventure, Al Futaisi Island is a place that rewards the determined.

A place shaped by the past

Just 15 minutes by boat from the city, Al Futaisi Island in Abu Dhabi feels much like a forgotten world. At its edge sit palm-fringed paths and empty chalets, memories of the island’s brief chapter as an eco-tourism resort several decades ago. The crowds may have left, but the natural beauty that brought them here remains: gazelles roam freely, ospreys skim the skies and mangroves stretch into hidden lagoons.

Bring your camera, because tucked within this haven are traces of a long and storied past, including an Arabian-style mud-brick fort, old wells, a mosque and centuries-old burial sites that hint at a fascinating history. You could also marvel at unique rock formations jutting out from the sand, set up a picnic on the beach and take a walk along the unspoilt shoreline.

There’s no public ferry or formal schedule. But if you’re curious enough, your best bet is to book a private boat charter from the city. Operators may be able to arrange a landing if conditions and permissions allow, giving you the unique opportunity to explore one of Abu Dhabi’s most intriguing hidden gems yourself. Access may be limited, but if you can find your way there, you’ll be part of a very lucky few.
